Abstract:
This study aimed at investigating the preventive and rejuvenating capacity of 1-isothiocyanato-4- (methylsulfinyl) butanein annular punctured intervertebral disc degeneration in rabbit model.Twentyfive New Zealand white rabbits (1.5 to 3.0 kg each) underwent annular puncture.Group 1 received 50 mg/kg of phosphate-buffered saline orally for 8 weeks (non-punctured group); group 2 received 50 mg/kg phosphate-buffered salinesolution immediately after puncture for 8 weeks (model saline group I); group 3 received 50 mg/kg phosphate-buffered salinesolution after 8 weeks of puncture for another 8 weeks (model saline group II); group 4 received the oral administration of 450 mg/kg of 1-isothiocyanato-4- (methylsulfinyl) Butane solution immediately after puncture for 8 weeks; group 5 received the oral administration of 450 mg/kg of 1-isothiocyanato-4-(methylsulfinyl) Butane solution after 8 weeks of puncture for another 8 weeks.Serial X-rays were performed at 0, 8 and 16weeks for the disc height. Upon sacrifice, the whole spinal column and discs were extracted and analyzed for various histological staining techniques (H&E and HVG), biochemical and immunohistochemical analysis. There wasdecreased in disc height in the X- ray and was significantly prevented and regenerated after the administration of 1-isothiocyanato-4-(methylsulfinyl) Butane solution. The histological grade, collagen type 1 and 2, aggrecan, and matrix metalloprotease-13 mRNA expression and histological analysiswere definitive in the degeneration processes thereby affirming the X-ray data. This study therefore ascertain that 1-isothiocyanato-4-(methylsulfinyl) Butane had anabolic effects on degenerated disc and could provide valuable information for consideration in clinical trials.

Abstract:
Phytonutrients present in Alafia barteri leaves include antioxidants which serves to protect cells and tissues against detrimental effects of reactive oxygen species and other free radicals. This research work was targeted at investigating the activities of oral administration of aqueous leaf extract of Alafia barteri on the histology of the prefrontal cortex, heart, kidney, liver and testis of adult Sprague Dawley rats. Twelve (n=12) adult male Sprague Dawley rats weighing between 170-200 g (4-6 weeks old) were used for this study; they were divided into 2 groups of six rats each. The control group A received 2 ml/kg normal saline and treated group B received 500 mg/kg body weight aqueous extract of Alafia barteri for twenty eight days. The gross anatomical parameters of the selected organs and their histology were assessed. The gross anatomical and histological observation of the prefrontal cortex, heart, kidney, liver and testis revealed no visible distortion in Alafia barteri extract treated group when compared with control. Aqueous leaf extract of Alafia barteri thus has no deleterious effects on the histological profile of the prefrontal cortex, heart, kidney, liver and testis of the rats.

Abstract:
Background: This study was conducted to provide baseline data of the nasal ergonomics for male and female and to identify the differences in Nasal parameters of male and female oyemekun ethnic group in Akure southwest Nigeria. Materials and Methods: The sample comprised of one hundred and twenty five (125) males and one hundred twenty (125) females of oyemekun descendant. The ages of the subjects ranged from 18-65years. Nasal Length (NL), Nasal Height (NH), Nasal Width (NW), Nasal Depth (ND) was obtained with the aid of a sliding caliper and nasal indices were calculated as the ratio of nasal width and nasal height multiplied by 100. The data were subjected to statistical analysis using descriptive statistics and t-test. Results: Males had mean nasal Length, Height, Width, Depth and index of 2.93cm, 3.10cm, 3.07cm, 0.26cm, and 98.92 respectively, while those of females were 1.97cm, 2.44cm, 2.27, 0.21 and 92.94 respectively. The mean nasal index of the oyemekun males was significantly higher than that of the females (P

Abstract:
Male reproductive function is clearly impaired in diabetes. This study investigates the responses to the bioactive component of Crassocephalum crepidioides (C. crepidioides) on histomorphology, spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis in Streptozotocin induced Diabetic Male Rats. Eighteen (18) male diabetic and twelve non diabetic male rats were divided into five groups of six (n=6) rats each. Group A served as non diabetic (ND) control were given 2 mL/kg distilled water each twice daily, group B: Diabetic control (DC); diabetic rats given 2 mL/kg distilled water each daily as placebo, group C: 500 mgkg-1 body weight of C. crepidioides was administered orally twice daily in Non-Diabetic groups, group D:500 mgkg-1 body weight of C. crepidioides was administered orally twice daily in Diabetic groups; group E: Diabetic rats treated subcutaneously with 5 units/kg.bwt of insulin. The duration of the study was 28 days. Parameters tested include: fasting blood and serum glucose, sperm parameters, Testosterone (TT), Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing hormone (LH) and testicular histology. C. crepidioides significantly decreased blood and serum glucose levels and significantly improved sperm quality and TT, FSH and LH in diabetic rats when compared with the Non-diabetic control. Degeneration and inflammatory responses in the testicular cells of the diabetic rats were significant improved after the administration of the plant extracts. The present study suggested that C. crepidioides extract improved the quality, viability, motility of semen analysis and reproductive hormone thereby preserving the testicular functions and male genital organs in diabetic rats.

Abstract:
Background: Intervertebral disc degeneration is one of the leading causes of Low back pain that is regarded as one of the most frequent neurological ailments. Objective: To determine the regenerative potential of sulforaphane and riboceine supplements in a rabbit model in annular punctured intervertebral disc degeneration. Methods: Forty New Zealand white rabbits (3 to 3.5 kg each) underwent annular puncture of the L2-L3, L3-L4, and L4-L5 discs. Rabbits were sacrificed at 2, 4 and 8 after puncture. For a longitudinal study to assess changes in disc height over time, serial X-rays were performed at 0, 4 and 8 weeks for the rabbits. Upon sacrifice, the whole spinal column and discs were extracted and analyzed with real time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, and histological staining. Results: The radiology assessment revealeda significant progressive decrease in disc height which was reversed by the administration of sulforaphane and riboceine. Significant disc space narrowing compared to preoperative disc height was observed during the time period (p
